I like travelling less and less. Orlando was not very exciting - it was hot and sticky and very expensive. It seems that Mickey Mouse attracts lots of conferences and business events so they can charge what they like.
It was worth visiting Patty, who seems to have had a miracle cure, though has now to build up her strength so that she can get on with life. She has always been an optimist, and this is now paying off. It was also good to meet Paul, her intended future partner, who is very nice.
On Thursday evening Jan and Anne (Jan and Patty's mother) came to Orlando to see me and we all had a meal together. Anne has alzheimer's, but is very sweet with it and just goes with the flow. Jan gave me all the family news.
I managed to sleep for most of the flight from New York to Shannon, and then went to bed until lunch-time when I got home. I feel considerably better than I did earlier, but need a few days to get back to normal. This coming month is a busy one, with Newtown-related meetings the next 3 weekends, and at least one committee meeting in the week preceding School Committee. We intend to spend the final weekend of October, which is a bank holiday weekend, bringing our newly painted boat back down to Dromineer. It's very posh!

Sea air
The men in my life decided that I needed fresh sea air to blow things out of my mind, so we headed off for west Clare yesterday afternoon. We found a lovely place for the dogs to go for a crazy run, at the less used end of Lahinch, and we all enjoyed the sea air.
I was fascinated by some surfers who were being pulled along by a large flying kite/sail-like object. It was difficult to work out how they could go in the opposite direction to the wind, but as we got near I saw that there seem to be a lot of adjustment strings that may make the kite get different wind directions. It was amazing, though, as one guy was going extremely fast across the water, and being pulled right up in the air every now and again. It must be exhilarating if you do it right.
We then went to Vaughans in Liscannor for a beautiful meal. I felt very sleepy on the way home, and had a good sleep last night. Those men in my life are very kind!
Today is rainy so my idea that I would do gardening and clean the outside of the windows has gone awry. Maybe I'll just read a book instead of doing all the housework I hate. I'm reading a book by Zultan Zinn-Collis, a survivor of the Holocaust and Bergen-Belsen camp, who was adopted by and Irishman, Bob Collis, and went to Newtown. It is fascinating, and horrific, but very readable.
I think the last person to leave Limerick has probably turned out the lights by now. Limerick has reached the all-Ireland hurling final for the first time in many years. I could hear the cars going past this morning on the main road heading for Croke Park, so there must have been lots of them.

Why is it?
Why is it that I end up in positions of responsibility? Why is it that these (voluntary) positions often involve resolving rows? Is it me (says she, thinking of Oscar Wilde and lost parents), or is it that I get appointed in this kind of situation? What would have happened this summer is someone entirely different was chair of NS Committee? Where would we be now - better or worse? In fact, would we have even tackled the junior school situation in the first place?
None of these questions seem answerable right now. If it is me, though, I should get out of my position forthwith. If it isn't me, then it is my responsibility to ensure that rows like this don't happen again over other things. However, I just don't have the energy to do a demanding job and act as chair of NS Committee. Given the choice right now between the two, my job seems more important and deserving of my energies. I'm not a quitter, though, so will probably keep on trundling.
