Cuba, here we are!

The old American cars on the streets are amazing. We were in one today that brought us to the beach and it was really comfortable inside. The driver had to go very slowly over bumps, though, and there were lots of those. On stretches of road that were approx 100 metres long there was no tarred surface, and these appeared at random intervals. We´ve decided not to hire a car as it would be too difficult to negotiate the roads ourselves.

The other strange thing is the dog population. I must take a photo of the standard dog here as most of them are similar. They are thin, a bit like a taller and thinner version of a terrier. Plenty of them lie around the streets and all seem very passive.

Coffee is served very sweet most of the time as an espresso. At breakfast they serve milky coffee and that is very nice. Yesterday I had to do without it for breakfast and most of the day - I had an espresso in the evening. Tomorrow it is likely to be the same as we set off for a ferry to get us back to mainland Cuba from Isla de Juventud at 6am.

More at a later date......

One day to go...

Cuba, here we come.  Passport, visa, tickets....oops, need
a towel, squash it all in and hope it won't burst.  Nearly
there now. Excitement.....
I've been working late a couple of nights this week so
I'm tired now, and relieved that the week is nearly over.
I'll look forward to going back to work after the holidays,
though, as I'm enjoying it.
Next blog might be from Cuba... or Dublin or Paris airports,
but hopefully not from them as it would mean we have
been stranded.

Here I am, late in the evening

I have to talk with a group of people today who don't come into work until 8pm so I've been getting ready what I have to say to them.

This day next week C and I will be well into our Cuban holiday. I need to remember to root out some items for her that are in her bedroom at home. She needs to come over to Dublin from Wales and gales are forecast for Friday, so it will be a relief when she gets here. We have a nice guesthouse booked near the airport so will be able to roll out of our beds on Saturday morning and get straight to the flight to Paris, and then on to Havana.

I met a gynaecologist today. He is 50 too! He doesn't have "woman" problems, though, so it's easy for him. When he is examining women he has to have a nurse present in the room as a witness - it's sad to realise that that is necessary.

My very own blog

Everyone else in the family has a blog so I suppose I'd better get started.
It's a mild Sunday and I've so far
  • gone to our barge and brushed loads of leaves off it, as well as collecting a battery charger. The battery charger is needed in case the car battery dies during a 2 week absence in Cuba
  • walked the two dogs - they are happy as it was a nice long one down the river
  • ironed loads of blouses and trousers
  • taught myself how to blog
Later I will go in to work at shift changeover time and see what happens then, as well as preparing for various presentations I have to make this week.
